What is Meta AI?

Meta AI is the in-house AI assistant from Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook). It is directly integrated into Meta's largest platforms: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. With over 3 billion users across these platforms, Meta AI potentially has the largest reach of any AI assistant worldwide.

Technically, Meta AI is based on the Llama model family, Meta's open-source LLMs. The current model Llama 3.1 is available in various sizes (8B, 70B, 405B parameters) and competes with GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet on benchmarks.

Llama — The Open Source Foundation

The strategically most important aspect of Meta AI is not the consumer chatbot but the underlying Llama models. Unlike ChatGPT's closed GPT models, Llama models are open source and can be self-hosted by companies.

This means: full data control, no API dependency, no data flowing to third parties. For companies in regulated industries (healthcare, finance, public sector), this is a decisive advantage.

Meta AI offers two levels for businesses: First, the consumer chatbot as a channel (AI-powered customer interaction via WhatsApp Business). Second, Llama models as infrastructure for custom AI solutions — especially when data privacy, compliance, or cost efficiency are priorities.
