// Definition
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization.
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — the optimization of your brand and your content for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. The term is deliberately modeled on SEO. Where Search Engine Optimization aimed to appear as high as possible among Google's blue links, GEO aims to be mentioned, cited and recommended as often as possible in the answers of generative language models.
The mechanics behind it are different. Classic SEO is click-based: you rank for a keyword, the user clicks your link, the traffic lands on your page. GEO is visibility-based: the user asks ChatGPT, gets a pre-filtered answer — and decides, based on that answer, whether your name is even in play. Position 1 in an AI answer is more valuable in 2026 than position 1 on Google, because it replaces the pre-selection.
An important myth debunked: SEO is not dead. An analysis by Originality.ai shows that around 52 percent of all LLM citations come from the top 10 of Google's search results. Anyone not visible on Google is at a massive disadvantage in ChatGPT too — especially with RAG systems like Perplexity, Gemini and ChatGPT Search that use live search results as their basis. The Pirates rule of thumb: first a clean SEO foundation, then build GEO on top.
Like SEO, GEO consists of two areas. On-page GEO covers everything you do on your own website: high information density with original data, factual accuracy with linked sources, clear structure with H2/H3 hierarchies, TL;DR boxes at the start of every article, FAQ sections at the end, clean schema markup (Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Organization). Off-page GEO covers everything outside your domain: brand mentions in trade media, author reputation, Wikipedia entries, reviews, podcast appearances and thematic cluster mentions. Unlike classic SEO, mentions without a link count as a reputation signal here — because LLMs learn probabilities over token sequences, not backlink graphs.
In a 2025 study, Ahrefs showed that visitors who reach websites from LLMs have a four- to nine-times higher conversion rate than organic Google traffic. The reason: the AI has already pre-qualified them. Anyone recommended once by ChatGPT also benefits from the brand lift — even without a click, the brand burns itself into memory and later drives direct traffic and brand searches. Anyone not in the LLM answer in 2026 doesn't even make it into the B2B buying cycle.
We see GEO as the natural evolution of SEO — not as a replacement. Our engagements combine both: classic ranking tracking plus LLM visibility monitoring via Kraaw and Brand Radar. The full definition, the seven ranking factors and the 5-step audit are in our glossary entry GEO — Generative Engine Optimization.
// What we measure
Visibility is measurable.
These are your 6 KPIs.
Daily snapshots in our tracking platform Kraaw. Every question your audience asks in ChatGPT & co. is measured — and translated into measurable KPIs.
Visibility Score
Main indicator: Mention Rate × Position Weight × Platform Weight. A single score that sums up your overall visibility across all LLMs.
Mention Rate
Share of all relevant queries in which your brand is mentioned. The fundamental metric: are you named at all?
Position Weight
Where in the LLM answer are you named? Position 1 counts 1.0, position 5 only 0.5. Prominence beats a mere mention.
Sentiment
How does the LLM talk about you? Positive, neutral, negative. Incl. context analysis: praise, comparison, recommendation or warning?
Share of Voice
Your share of all mentions in your market — against direct competitors. Who dominates the answers in your category?
Citation Rate
How often do Perplexity, ChatGPT Search & co. link directly to your domain as a source? A measurable traffic lever — not just a brand mention.
// Score interpretation
Excellent — hold
Good — sharpen selectively
Medium — GEO needed

Visibility Tracking (Kraaw)
Daily snapshots of your brand in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews & DeepSeek. 50–500 queries per market, all 6 KPIs in one dashboard. Powered by Kraaw.
Visibility Audit
In-depth analysis: where are you named? Who dominates your category? Which sources do LLMs recommend today? A concrete action roadmap prioritized by impact.
GEO Content Optimization
Citation hooks, FAQ schemas, entity markup, how-to structures, definition pages. Content written so that LLMs use it as a source — instead of ignoring it.
Authority Building
Wikipedia entry, guest posts on authoritative platforms, PR, trade publications. Domain authority and brand mentions — the ingredients LLMs prefer in training and RAG.
llms.txt & Crawl Setup
Technical foundation: llms.txt, robots.txt for AI crawlers, structured data, Schema.org, Open Graph. So that GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot & co. can find your content at all — and classify it correctly.
Reporting & Alerts
Monthly visibility reporting with score trend, competitive comparison, new mentions, sentiment shifts. Alerts on sudden changes — before customers notice.
// Ranking factors
What LLMs
really weight.
5 factors decide whether your brand shows up in a ChatGPT answer. Source: 6 months of reverse-engineering across 50,000+ LLM answers — built into our tracking engine Kraaw.
Authority
Wikipedia entry, domain authority, mentions in authoritative sources (universities, government agencies, trade associations, top media). LLMs prefer brands that are independently confirmed multiple times.
Citability
Clear factual statements, precise definitions, concrete numbers. Instead of "We offer flexible packages" → "Packages from €49/month with 1,000 queries". LLMs cite extractable sentences.
Structure
FAQ schema, how-to schema, comparison tables, clear H1→H2→H3 hierarchy. Structured data makes content directly extractable for language models.
Freshness
"Last updated: April 2026", versioned pricing, regular content refreshes. LLMs weight fresh content more heavily — especially Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
Fact density
Specific numbers instead of platitudes. Comparison figures, source citations, no filler words. Every sentence carries information — that's the style LLMs extract from the web.

// FAQ
Frequently asked questions
about AI visibility.
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility (also called LLM visibility or AI search visibility) measures how often and how prominently your brand is mentioned in the answers of large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. It is the new counterpart to classic Google rankings — decisive for brands in the age of generative search.
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO is the optimization of content so that LLMs preferentially cite and recommend it in their answers. While SEO optimizes for Google rankings, GEO optimizes for being mentioned in AI answers — with structured data, FAQ schemas, entity optimization and citation-ready passages.
How is AI visibility measured?
We measure Visibility Score (0–100), Mention Rate (share of queries with a mention), Position Weight (how early in the answer), Sentiment (positive/neutral/negative), Share of Voice versus competitors and Citation Rate (linked sources). Daily snapshots in Kraaw show changes in real time.
Which LLMs do you track?
ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and DeepSeek. We use our own tracking platform Kraaw — the only LLM visibility engine developed in the DACH region. GDPR-compliant, German servers.
What does AI visibility cost as a service?
Visibility Audit (one-off) from €2,900. GEO Sprint (8 weeks of optimization incl. tracking) from €12,500. Continuous Visibility (tracking + content + reporting) from €3,500/month. Standalone tracking without service: Kraaw from €49/month.
How quickly do I see results in LLM answers?
First mention-rate improvements are measurable after 4–8 weeks (web-crawl updates in Perplexity and ChatGPT Search). Substantial visibility gains take 3–6 months, because LLMs adopt content updates into their training and RAG indexes with a delay. We track daily so that every change becomes visible.
Does GEO replace classic SEO?
No — GEO complements SEO. Google AI Overviews still use SEO signals (E-E-A-T, backlinks, technical performance). Classic SEO + GEO together deliver maximum visibility across all search channels. We do both — in a coordinated way.
What is the difference from Profound, Peec or getcito?
Profound, Peec, Scrunch, getcito are pure US SaaS tools. We offer tool + service from a single source: our own DACH platform Kraaw (GDPR-compliant), combined with strategy, content production and authority building. As an agency, we implement the measures — not just deliver reports.
