August 2026 update: where Sora 2 stands

Searching for Sora 2 today leads to a different situation than at launch. In early January 2026 OpenAI ended free access; video generation then required ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) or Pro (from $100/month, which bundles the stronger Sora 2 Pro). In April 2026 OpenAI discontinued the Sora app for web and iOS entirely. Since then Sora 2 has been API-only, priced between $0.10 and $0.50 per generated second depending on resolution. And according to OpenAI's announcement, the API itself shuts down in September 2026.
